Cafe 898’s Burger & Fries

The best burgers I have ever tasted were the ones I had in Australia. The Aussies simply know how to throw a good BBQ party. But regardless of where you go in the world, you are bound to find at least one spot that serves a proper burger. I found it.

Although strictly being a café, Café 8.98 has a variety of savory items on their menu including a Beef Burger and a vegetarian Bean & Mushroom Cheeseburger. They are already a great choice in their own right, but the Krabi Town branch of Café 8.98 organizes a tempting Burger Saturday. For 300 Baht you can choose between one of the burgers, which comes with a serving of French fries and a soft drink of your choice. Sorry, delicious Thai food but how could I say no to that?! As a carnivore, I went for the Beef Burger with a medium rare patty. It, of course, is all personal preference but I think in this state the patty has just the right firmness and juiciness.

I already knew I was in for something special as soon as I tried a handful of those French fries. I especially loved that they were crispy and not at all greasy considering the fact that in certain fast food chains it’s the other way around.

But at some point I couldn’t wait for the actual entrée and – lo and behold – it tasted just as good as it looked. After all, in the best cases, a meal should also be a feast for the eye.

The vegetables were fresh with crunchy lettuce, ripe slices of tomato, and pieces of jalapeños to add a little zest to the mix. The beef patty was exactly the way I described it above and let’s not forget about the smoked bacon! My two personal highlights, however, were the homemade BBQ sauce and the slice of mature cheddar.

The burger was a testament to how simple a dish can be if the ingredients are of a high quality. You don’t need more. On the contrary, more ingredients would not enhance but diminish the whole eating experience unnecessarily. “Less is more” as they say. Café 8.98 clearly took this adage to heart and, thus, succeeded in the creation of an exquisite Beef Burger.
